  • Circularity and Resource Efficiency of Food Systems: 22 May 2019

    SAFE member National R&D Institute for Food Bioresources, IBA in Romania is organising this conference which will take place under the Romanian presidency of the European Union.

    The intention is to create a supportive environment for establishing new collaborations in the field of agri-food research that share the same ideas as the Food 2030 initiative.

    The main aim of the event is to raise awareness about sustainable production and consumption, to minimize food waste and to transform agrofood by products and residues into new raw materials for different purposes with an environmentally friendly approach.

  • Global Food Safety Summit. 2-3 Sept 2019

    Managing a safe and secure global food supply chain from farm to fork!

    As in previous years, this event will bring together key stakeholders from all along several food chains including manufacturers, suppliers, regulators and the experts that support them. Highlights of the event will include case study experiences. Networking opportunities will be plentiful as representatives from major food and beverage producers, suppliers and retailers participate.

  • INCREaSE 2019: 9-11 Oct 2019

    SAFE consortium will participate in the International Congress on Engineering and Sustainability in the XXIst Century to be held at the University of Algarve in Faro PT from 8-11 October 2019.

    The SAFE Secretary General, Katherine M Flynn, is a member of the Scientific Committee.

    The upcoming 2018 meetings of the SAFE consortium Executive Board will be by teleconference in

    TUESDAY 19 June at 15H CET

    Log in as a SAFE member to download the Agenda and the Minutes of all SAFE EB meetings. Also available are the Agenda and the Minutes of all SAFE Member Meetings, including the Annual General Meetings. Once logged in, these documents become visible as a separate article in Past Events.

Overfed fruit flies a model of human diabetes - Science Daily 5 June 2012

Researchers at Southern Methodist University in Dallas Texas, find that overfed fruit flies not only gain weight but have shortened life spans -- and develop insulin resistance, a hallmark of Type 2 human diabetes.

Disrupting food: up to 30 different endocrine disrupting pesticides found in fruits and vegetables in the European Union - PanEurope 5 June 2012

A press release from the Pesticide Action Network on monitoring data from EFSA which shows that multiple pesticide residues with endocrine disrupting activity are found on fruits and vegetables in European supermarkets.

Over 250,000 eggs recalled in Germany in latest dioxin scare - Food Quality News 21 June 2012

More than a quarter of a million chicken eggs are being recalled in Germany after in-house testing discovered “excessive levels” of the poisonous chemical, dioxin.

The contamination has so far been detected at just one farm in the Emsland area of Lower Saxony.

EFSA assesses impact of Schmallenberg virus in EU - EFSA 14 June 2012

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has published its overall assessment of the impact of infection by the so-called “Schmallenberg” virus (SBV) on animal health, animal production and animal welfare. Following its first detection in Germany in 2011, the situation in the EU by mid May 2012, was that SBV has been reported in 3745 holdings, with cases confirmed by laboratory testing in eight Member States. EFSA concludes that the impact of this animal disease on holdings does not exceed 4% for sheep or 2% for cattle at the Member State level.

What determines the nutrition knowledge of food shoppers across Europe? - EUFIC 13 June 2012

Researchers from Aarhus University, Denmark, and the European Food Information Council (EUFIC) have analysed socio-demographic and attitudinal determinants of nutrition knowledge of food shoppers from six European countries: UK, Sweden, France, Germany, Poland, and Hungary. Main findings include social grade, country of residence and age to directly influence participants’ nutrition knowledge. Furthermore, older people, women and respondents of a higher socio-economic status showed a more active interest in healthy eating.
