Global Food Safety Summit: 12-13 Sept 2018
Managing a safe and secure global food supply chain from farm to fork!
As in previous years, this event brought together key stakeholders from all along several food chains including manufacturers, suppliers, regulators and the experts that support them. Highlights of the event included case study experiences. Networking opportunities were plentiful as representatives from major food and beverage producers, suppliers and retailers participated.

GHI Congress on Food Safety and Security: 24 March 2019
The Global Harmonization Initiative (GHI) is an international non-profit network founded in 2004 to promote harmonization of global food safety regulations and legislation. Read more about GHI here.
GHI held its first World Congress to address the problem of differences in regulations between countries and scientifically unjustified food scares which lead to the destruction and/or refusal of safe food. Read more about the Congress here.
The GHI World Congress was a platform for presenting the most suitable assays for food safety assessments within different fields- chemistry and microbiology to genetic toxicology and genomics. Congress participants produced a declaration which calls for and establishes a target to change regulations based on available knowledge.
Biotechnology and Quality of Raw Materials and Foodstuffs: 17-19 Sept 2018
The Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Sciences of the Slovak University of Agriculture at Nitra, a SAFE member since January 2018, hosted the 13th International Conference on Biotechnology and Quality of Raw Materials and Foodstuffs. The SAFE consortium Secretary General, Dr Hrönn Jörundsdóttir, gave a Plenary Lecture, Sparking New Life into Food Safety Research.
The conference took place from 17-19 September 2018 at the Smolenice Castle in Smolenice, Slovak Republic. Sessions included
- Biotechnology and Molecular Biology
- Food Design and Innovation
- Personalized Nutrition and Health
- Innovation Trends in Food Industry
Papers will soon be published in the Journal of Microbiology, Biotechnology and Food Sciences.
It was an excellent event - and we look forward to the next one!
SAFE consortium 2018 Annual General Meeting: 24 April
The 2018 Annual General Meeting of The European Association for Food Safety, SAFE consortium was TUESDAY 24 APRIL 2018 at the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) building in Brussels.

At the 2018 AGM,
- Dr Luis Vivas-Alegre, Policy Coordinator at DG Health & Food Safety spoke about opportunities in H2020 and FP9
- SAFE activities in 2017 were reviewed.
- The 2017 budget was closed and the 2018 budget approved. Financial documents are also available on the SAFE Members Only pages.
- The 3 new member institutes of SAFE consortium were presnted.
- An idea forum allowed all AGM attendees to contribute to plans for SAFE consortium in 2018 and beyond.
The SAFE statutes specify that the General Meeting of the Members is the supreme governing body of the SAFE consortium.

SAFE speakers at EFSA Risk Assessment Research Assembly. 7 Feb 2018
The past president of the SAFE consortium Executive Board, Begoña Pérez Villarreal of AZTI, and past SAFE consortium Secretary General, past president of the SAFE Executive Board and current Executive Board member, Oddur M. Gunnarsson of Matis Ltd. were invited speakers and panel participants at the 2018 EFSA Event on Risk Assessment in Utrecht (NL) on 7 February 2018.
This event brought together research funders, policy/decision makers and leading food safety organisations. There was a lot of spirit and many new ideas presented. Clearly food safety is not "solved" and food safety work must continue.
The aim was to stimulate new partnerships in food safety risk assessment research to safeguard public health and highlight the importance of public funding. A follow-up risk management forum is planned to keep the discussions alive.

SAFE Special Issue in Trends in Food Science & Technology. Release Event 3 April 2019
On 3 April 2019, 25+ stakeholders attended the Release Event for the SAFE consortium Special Issue of Trends in Food Science &Technology:
Keeping Food Safety on the Agenda for 15 Years: The SAFE consortium
The 80-page Special Issue Journal contains 22 short review articles and an introduction. The articles are organised into five food safety themes, each of which was led by a SAFE member who invited experts in the field to contribute articles for the peer-reviewed publication:
- Food in the Circular Bioeconomy, by Matis Ltd in Iceland
- Safe Nutrients, by IBA in Romania
- Emerging Food SafetyThreats, by DiSBA-CNR in Italy
- Chemical Contamination of Food, by azti-tecnalia in Spain
- Communication of Food-Related Risks, by ESB-UCP in Portugal

SAFE consortium 2017 AGM Part 2: Dec 14
The 2017 Annual General Meeting, Part 2 of the SAFE consortium took place by teleconference on THURSDAY 14 DECEMBER 2017.

The SAFE Annual General Meeting took place in two parts this year:
Part 1 was on Thursday 4 May by teleconference (Lync). Here, the 2016 budget was closed and the 2017 budget approved. Financial documents were sent to all confirmed participants and questions invited by email.
Part 2 on Thursday 14 December by teleconference (Lync). Here, SAFE activities in 2016 and 2017 were reviewed. A financial update was presented. Members of the Executive Board were changed and SAFE plans for 2018 discussed.
The SAFE statutes specify that the General Meeting of the Members is the supreme governing body of the SAFE consortium.
SAFE at INCReASE: 11-13 Oct 2017
SAFE consortium participated in the International Congress on Engineering and Sustainability in the XXIst Century held at the University of Algarve in Faro PT.
The SAFE Scientific Secretary, Katherine M Flynn, was the keynote speaker on Food Safety under the Healthy Foods topic and she chaired the Food Safety session.
